Just wanted to throw a suggestion out there. I think it would be great if I could link my profile and have the statistics and rankings publicly viewable.

Will this make you more popular among Bohemians? Seriously, with all my scores on auditory recognition (I got all JA Sensei vocabulary modules covered with 90% confidence) I can barely capture one word out of ten when I watch anime or movies. Nothing to brag about in my humble opinion...

I wouldn’t bring up the suggestion solely on bragging rights. I really think the site would benefit from the increased traffic it would receive if board trollers (like myself) are able to link to our profiles on the site.

Generally speaking, I plan to make the site more "social", with people being able to share more data. It's just a matter of time, for the time being I'm focusing on content creation.

Tangorn, I agree with you, even if you learn many words, you won't be able to understand properly. You need to learn not only by elements (single kanji, single word, etc.), but face real and natural Japanese, such as reading texts, trying to translate some texts, watching Japanese TV programs with subtitles if you can, etc. I've already created a few texts with progressive difficulty, and this year I plan to add such material.

Awesome, thanks. I am trying to watch movies and anime in Japanese with subtitles as much as I can, but so far as I wrote above the best effect was that I catch a word or two, then try to make sense of them and miss the subtitle :) Nice tools are visual novels that allow to replay the sound for a scene as many times as I need, but not every one does allow it... Reading is a bit better as the time does not press...
By the way, I tried hands free phrase book on JA sensei the other day, and it seems like the pauses increase up to weird lengths as soon as the screen goes blank. It played Japanese phrase when I was getting off the bus, and the translation when I was taking off my shoes at home :)

Oh funny, JA Sensei is speaking alone. There is much that can be done to improve the hand free mode, but the most important is to get rid o bugs. What do you mean by screen getting blank? When the device goes off after a few minutes for energy saving? I hope I can reproduce the issue to see where it comes from.

Yes watching animes and movies doesn't help much if you can't understand much. Only babies can learn this way (we were all genius, I said "were"). It's better to isolate short cuts and try to understand bit by bit. Maybe use the subtitles to translate the sentences if you can't understand them by listening, repeat the sentence until the structure and words are clear for you, and watch the anime again trying to identify all elements you've just learned. There are linguistic approaches that advocates learning languages by learning sentences by heart, and never by single elements. It depends on people I think, but for me I think both should be practiced. People often only learn by elements when learning alone, which leads to become an encyclopeadia of the language, not a speaker of the language.

Yes. As long as I keep it from sleeping it seems fine. Another peculiarity that I have noticed was when I accidentally pressed hands free button twice, it sounded as if two audio streams were running in parallel.

Are you planning to port the "illustrated situations" exercises to JA Sensei? They seem like a nice resource, but I never spend much time with them as I usually study while commuting...
