Is the following sentence

彼女は囲碁が上手なんです。

I do not fully understand why the adjetive 上手 is changed into 上手なん

なんです comes from なのです

Again... thanks.

An advice to people in general... asking questions like this to a native japanese isn´t always a good idea

I ask the same question days ago to a friend of mine... a japanese girl, born in Tokyo and the answer was... "maybe because it looks better"

Well, maybe it looks better, but this isn´t the real reason

A native knows "how to speak", but not always "why", they know by heart and sometimes they don´t remember "why"

Funny... or not

Yes it's funny! It happens the same for our grammar too.

なんです looks better to give an explanatory tone to an assertion though 彼女は囲碁が上手です。is correct too (it's a assertion without that explanatory tone).

As far I'm concerned when i read some examples, I don't focus on words and meanings only.
I often try thinking about the context (social interactions and positions between characters, tones,gender...) to help me.
The more you know nuances, grammar, vocabulary in Japanese, the more natural look your sentences. :)
